Dec. 4th - 8th

As always, we have had a lot of learning in our class this week. We spent A LOT of time discussing kindness. Specifically, we discussed teasing and how it may not be funny for the other person, as well as how being kind includes being respectful to the people around you.

During Language Arts, students practiced Words Their Way and did silent reading. Lots of reading occurred because we added over 30 brand new books to our classroom library, which of course was pretty exciting. On a less exciting note, two WTW groups had spelling tests this week and received new words: the other two groups will have spelling tests next week. (If your child has lost their list of words for home and you would like them, the words can be found on the Words Their Way page on this website.)

In Math, we finished 1-digit by 1-digit multiplication and experimented with 1-digit by 2-digit multiplication. Students should still be practicing skip-counting at home, and can even start practicing multiplication facts. I encourage students to skip-count on their fingers to figure out 1-by-1 multiplication questions. Using the example 5x6, I would first ask the student if they're going to skip by 5s or 6s; if they chose 5s, I would then tell them to hold up 6 fingers and count by 5s on those to get the answer. (Hopefully that makes sense.)

During Science this week, we talked about heat, thermal energy, and energy transfer. On Wednesday, we did a small experiment - students went through the entire scientific process to determine which of 3 cups was the best insulator. Unfortunately, our thermometer wasn't very accurate, so our results were skewed.

During Art today, students started an Elf project, so keep an eye on the Showcase page next week for some examples of those.

Finally, we are hoping to go on a skating field trip during the last week of school with Mr. Van Aalst's class. Mr. Van Aalst and I are looking for parent volunteers to join us, so please contact me if you are interested in helping out.

Enjoy your weekend!
