November 13th - 17th

Though it was short, we otherwise had an almost "normal" week.

During Math, we finished our addition and subtraction unit with a journal activity and some word problems. We experimented with numberless word problems - I created problem stories, and the students had to generate Math questions that could go with each story. Then, the students had to decide whether their questions were addition or subtraction questions. The activity was more difficult than I anticipated, but it let students discover which words mean addition and which ones mean subtraction. We finished our week with some skip-counting practice, as we will be starting multiplication on Monday.

During Language Arts, we discussed and explored the differences between ARE and OUR. We did talk about each definition, but our trick to remember which is which is that OUR can usually be replaced with MY and the sentences will still makes sense. We also started Words Their Way this week. Words Their Way is a spelling program that we are going to implement into our daily routine. There is a longer description about this program under the Words Their Way tab.

During Science, we explored the definitions of matter and properties. We did this by making vocabulary posters and describing classroom objects using properties of matter.

During Art, we learned about cool and warm colours. We started a winter project using watercolour paints, cool and warm colours, and line art. Keep an eye on the Showcase page for some examples from our class!
